Charles Lindberg

On August 31, 1974, Charles Lindberg was buried on the grounds of the Palapala Ho’omau Church in Kipahulu, Maui. The hero, who was the first human to fly alone nonstop from the United States to Europe, weathered a successful but stormy life. His son, Charles August Lindberg II was kidnapped and murdered. Lindberg was accused of Nazi sympathies during World War II. And after his death, it was discovered that he had had children by mistresses in Europe, three children proven, four unsubstantiated. Lindberg’s grave can be visited at the church today. Read more

Governor Linda Lingle & Judge Joseph Cardoza
Governor Linda Lingle maintains the Hawaii Superferry is being treated unfairly because other users of Hawaii state harbors never underwent Environmental Assessments (EA). Maui’s 2nd Circuit Judge Joseph Cardoza will hear arguments today to extend the temporary injunction suspending Superferry operations to Maui pending an EA, as required by a Hawaii Supreme Court ruling last week.  Lingle’s State  Dept. of Transportation is expected to argue that it be allowed to conduct an EA while the Superferry resumes operations. Meanwhile on Kauai, protestors on kayaks and surfboards successfully blocked Nawiliwili Harbor, shutting down Superferry operations to the Garden Isle after the US Coast Guard said it could not guarantee the harbor’s safety.
