Governor Linda Lingle maintains the Hawaii Superferry is being treated unfairly because other users of Hawaii state harbors never underwent Environmental Assessments (EA). Maui’s 2nd Circuit Judge Joseph Cardoza will hear arguments today to extend the temporary injunction suspending Superferry operations to Maui pending an EA, as required by a Hawaii Supreme Court ruling last week. Lingle’s State Dept. of Transportation is expected to argue that it be allowed to conduct an EA while the Superferry resumes operations. Meanwhile on Kauai, protestors on kayaks and surfboards successfully blocked Nawiliwili Harbor, shutting down Superferry operations to the Garden Isle after the US Coast Guard said it could not guarantee the harbor’s safety. SUPERFERRY INDEFINITELY SUSPENDS OPERATIONS
The interisland Superferry canceled scheduled service indefinitely yesterday, pending a court decision on Maui this afternoon and the resolution of safety concerns caused by a blockade of Nawiliwili Harbor by protesters on surfboards and canoes. Read more …
