MAUI’S FIRST TELEGRAPH - On September 2, 1877, C.H. Dickey operates Hawaii’s  earliest commercial telegraph system, connecting his stores in Haiku and Makawao, Maui. The following year, he is granted a charter for the Hawaiian Telegraph Company. Dickey’s stores sold general goods, and for 20 years served as the local post offices.

WORLD WAR II ENDS WITH JAPANESE SURRENDER - On the morning of September 2,  1945, more that two weeks after acceping the Allies’ terms, Japan formally surrendered. The ceremonies took place aboard the battleship USS Missouri, anchored with other United States’ and British war ships in Tokyo Bay. This battleship, the “Mighty MO,” is now anchored in Pearl Harbor on Oahu and is a popular visitor tour attraction.
