HAWAIIAN WORD OF THE DAY - LOKO ‘INO: Evil
HAWAIIAN PROVERB OF THE DAY - “She does for us, then strikes us with evil.”
TODAY - NOVEMBER 4th,: Stand for Justice Superferry Demonstration 1-3 pm, in front of the Federal Court House, Wailuku (across Main Street from McDonald’s). Maui, in solidarity with Kauai and the Big Island, will simultaneously hold a Justice protest in opposition to the Superferry Bailout Bill.

NOVEMBER 4, 1998: Incumbent Hawaii Governor Ben Cayetano narrowly defeats Maui Mayor Linda Lingle in one of the closest elections in Hawaii history. Throughout her political life, all but one of Lingle’s elections have been by very narrow margins, making her the ‘queen of the squeakbys’. In this instance, it is Lingle who lost, Cayetano winning by a less than 1% margin.
Four years later, Lingle squeaked by Mazie Hirono for the governorship, by fewer than 5,000 votes, thus becoming Hawaii’s first female elected governor, first Jewish governor, first twice-divorced governor and the first Hawaii governor not to have any children.
If ever there was an example of vicious determination and ugly political hunger winning the day, it is Lingle’s legacy (and a typical Republican trait). During her reign as Maui mayor, Lingle managed to screw up nearly everything she touched.
