NOVEMBER 12, 2003: The federal government returns the island of Kaho‘olawe to the State of Hawaii, and pledges $450 million to clean up the unexploded bombs and other ordinance embedded and strewn around the island after more than 40 years of use as a bombing range. One year later, it is apparent that a lot more money will be needed to clean up the island and make it safe. U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye (Dem. - Hawaii) pledges “whatever it takes” in funds
Today, 74% of the island’s surface is cleared. But, only 9% of the island’s surface has been cleared to a depth of four feet (called for in the original plan).
