HAWAIIAN WORD OF THE DAY — Hau‘oli: Happy, happiness“Tiny is the flower, yet it scents the grasses around it.”
Today: New Moon 7:41am - Devastating kona storm ends
December 9th, 1896: What a difference 111 years make! The Mauna Loa arrives in Honolulu Harbor after an eight-day voyage from San Francisco. The Mauna Loa is a steamer, the first of its kind that will become the inter-island ferry for Hawaii. Its first route is Honolulu to Kahului, which it begins in less than a week.
Upon its evening arrival, the Mauna Loa turns on its electric searchlights. This attracts and startles the fish in the harbor and the huge crowd, which has formed at the wharf to greet the ferry, delights and applauds the jumping fish and arriving ferry.
Today, no one on Maui is applauding the Superferry Alakai, nor the clueless Governor Linda Lingle, nor the hapless Coast Guard which has been ordered to prevent locals from using their harbor, nor the … well, is ANYONE happy?
