HAWAIIAN WORD OF THE DAY — Loa’a i ka uila: Shock“By blowing the medicine given by a kahuna, can the ugly gain his desire.”
January 9th, 2005: Maui Memorial Hospital announces that it wants to open an emergency clinic in West Maui on land Alexander & Baldwin (A&B) is willing to donate.
The hospital’s seeming beneficence is belied by its actions. For example, one could assume that the hospital wants to improve health care options on Maui. However, the center, led by CEO Wesley Lo, vigorously, even viciously, works to derail a planned hospital in Kihei. Fearing that the center’s business would be hurt, Lo lobbies government officials who must approve a Certificate of Need for the new Kihei medical facility to be built. Lo is successful in making sure the new hospital is killed.
The Maui Memorial Emergency Extension in West Maui opens at the end of 2006, to much local complaint. The hours are erratic and the facility cannot provide a full range of services.
