HAWAIIAN WORD OF THE DAY — Pipi’i: Overpriced, expensive
February 10th, 2007: The Maui News reports that housing prices on Maui reach record highs, with an average selling price of $612,000, which one Realtor calls “startling”. The median price for a house in Wailea/Makena for the same time period was $1,600,000.
Three years later, in the largest bust of the housing market ever recorded in U.S. history, housing prices plummet nationwide - except Hawaii - and in 2008 it is estimated that 2 million people will lose their homes because, not to put too fine a point on it, they bought houses they couldn’t really afford in the first place.
The rule of thumb in the Hawaiian housing market is that it takes 6 to 12 months for trends on the mainland to reach the state, which means the true slump won’t be felt here in the islands until this summer.
