HAWAIIAN WORD OF THE DAY — Loko Ino: Cruel
February 17, 1899 & 1910: This date proves very cruel to the Hawaiian Royal family. In 1899, Princess Ka’iulani petitioned President McKinley to have the U.S. compensate her for the loss of royal lands taken by the illegal overthrow of the monarchy in 1893. As her livelihood rested on income generated from confiscated lands, she felt she was entitled to payment for her loss. The president disagreed. In 1910, Queen Lili’uokalani returned from a personal visit to Washington, DC, where she too, failed to gain sympathy for crown lands taken from her during the 1893 overthrow. The U.S. Government didn’t so much as offer to pay for her trip.
Two experiences which prove once again that just compensation is a concept foreign to U.S. capitalism.
