Hawaii 5-0 LogoFebruary 19th, 1968: The world premiere of Hawaii Five-O is shown at the Royal Theater on Oahu. Shortly thereafter, the show became a CBS television series starring Jack Lord, which ran for 12 years, until 198o.

There is no Hawaii “5-0″ organization, and never has been. However, the name “5-0″ used to denote cops, became street lingo in the 1990’s and has since made its way into movies and television shows. The “Five-O” comes simply from the fact that Hawaii is the U.S. 50th state. When the premiere of the TV show was conceived and filmed, in 1967, Hawaii had been a state for just 8 years, and this was still a novelty.

The theme song remains one of the most recognizable pieces of music in the western world, and has shown up, with strong references to the television show itself, in a large number of plays, movies and television shows. Perhaps the most interesting use of the music in a movie came in the movie “Dish,” which detailed the story of the Australian tracking dish in the Outback used to track the Apollo 11 moon landing. When the U.S. Ambassador to Australia arrives at the site, the local band plays the American National Anthem - the “Theme from Hawaii Five-O.”
