April 2nd, 1917: Five Hawaiian residents, one from Maui, die when the American steamer carrying them off the coast of France, is attacked and sunk by Germans. The bodies are never recovered. By April 6, President Woodrow Wilson had asked Congress to declare  war against Germany, and the U.S. had entered World War I.
