Read NYT articleSmall Pox innoculations in KahuluiApril 4, 1888: A rough day - part of a rough three years, for people in the Camp Ward in Kahului, Maui. From 1887 to 1890, a stubborn epidemic of small pox attacked this ward without let up, killing dozens, making nearly a thousand sick during that time. As the Hawaiians had never had small pox until the British arrived, three guesses where it came from. The photo is an actual archival shot of a small pox “inoculation” at the ward in Kahului. Much like it was shown in the recent John Adams HBO miniseries (for those of you who are watching it), the inoculation consisted of putting live disease into the bloodstream, though a small enough amount that it was hoped the body could deal, and prevent a more deadly infection later. Inoculations in this way killed an estimated 20% of those taking the chance.
