EARTH DAY- April 22nd, 2008: Earth Day is the name given for two different celebrations, both held each spring in the northern hemisphere. They are intended to inspire awareness of and appreciation for the Earth and its environment. The United Nations celebrates an Earth Day each year on the Vernal Equinox, the first day of Spring (usually March 21), an observance initiated by peace activist John McConnell in 1969.A second Earth Day more commonly observed in the U.S., was founded by US Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in in the late 1960s. It is celebrated annually in many countries on April 22. - 2004: Pro football player Pat Tillman, who’d traded in a multimillion-dollar contract to serve as an Army Ranger in Afghanistan, was killed by friendly fire; he was 27.
- 2005: Zacarias Moussaoui pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiring with the Sept. 11 hijackers to kill Americans. (He was later sentenced to life in prison.)
