TODAY June 1st, 2008: Hurricane Season beginsJune 1st, 1977: “Operation Destroy” begins on Maui and Kauai. People know it today as Green Harvest. It’s point is to eradicate marijuana from the islands.

In part because the program is such a failure — marijuana is Maui’s and the state of Hawaii’s number one cash crop today — it is very difficult to find out how much money the program has cost during the past 30 years. It is certainly in the billions of dollars. Some believe that whatever effectiveness the program has had, has only spurred the use ICE. There’s no way to be sure of that either. Since the first human children thousands of years ago began spinning around and around to feel giddy and dizzy, humankind has sought out alterred states of conscience. To throw money on what is an innate drive is stupid.
