July Obon Dance & Festivals
During the summer months, the Obon tradition is celebrated at various island Hongwanji missions. This tradition was brought to Hawai’i by Japanese immigrants and has evolved into a social and cultural event as well as the religious custom it was designed as to honor ancestors through an evening of dance, music and merry-making. The dates and times for various festivals follow:

A World View of US

Just about any time, but particularly during this election year, it’s interesting to discover what the world thinks of us, us being the U.S. One publication that can fairly lay claim to being a straight and other-worldly view of our country is The Economist (www.economist.com). Americans often think of this publication as the British Time Magazine, but it’s not. It’s more complicated than that, takes a broader view of the world and tackles issues more directly than the mainstream American press does.

To prove this last statement, I take a quote from an editorial in the July 4 edition. The issue was how to get Robert Mugabe, the murderous leader of Zimbabwe, out of office. “[I]ts African neighbors need to tell the tyrant unambiguously to go - and to snuff him out if he refuses.”

I can’t recall an American Magazine calling for the assassination of an African leader.
