HAWAIIAN WORD OF THE DAY — Aukaka: August (month)
August 1st, 1916: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is established. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, established in 1916, displays the results of hundreds of thousands of years of volcanism, migration, and evolution that created the Hawaiian Islands. The park encompasses diverse environments on the Big Island of Hawaii that range from sea level to the summit of the earth’s largest volcano, 13,677-foot Mauna Loa. Kilauea, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, has been erupting continually since 1983. It provides scientists insights into the birth of the Hawaiian Islands.
