Hawaiian Day Octopus

HAWAIIAN MONTHS:
The months of the traditional Hawaiian calendar were determined by the 29.5-day cycle of Mahina, the moon. This is the month of Hilinaehu, July-August, which is a  good time for fishing the Hawaiian Day Octopus (Octopus cyanea).

The approximate 30-day moon cycle is divided into three 10-day weeks called anahulu.  This is the Hawaiian week of Ho‘onui Mahina (growing bigger). The 4 Ku days of this week are recommended for planting sweet potato, taro, and banana, which will grow upright. Today, the 7th day of the cycle, is the first ‘Olekukahi day, which is not recommended for planting or fishing. Tomorrow, the second ‘Olekukahi day, is the First Quarter Moon.
