HAWAIIAN WORD OF THE DAY — ‘Aihue: Thief
August 12th, 1898: Hawaii is formally annexed by the U.S. Upon assuming the Presidency, Republican and Imperialist William McKinley sent the Hawaii annexation treaty to the U.S. Senate, where it was approved. (Democrat President Grover Cleveland had resisted annexing Hawaii into the U.S.)Sovereignty of Hawai’i was formally transferred to the United States in ceremonies at ‘Iolani Palace on Aug. 12, 1898. Chief thief Sanford Dole spoke as the newly appointed governor of the Territory of Hawaii. The Hawaiian anthem, ”Hawai’i Pono ‘I” — with words written by King Kalakaua – was played as the Hawaiian flag was lowered, and replaced by the American flag and “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Read more about President William McKinley …
