Maui's First Telegraph

MAUI’S FIRST TELEGRAPH -
On September 2, 1877, C.H. Dickey operates Hawaii’s earliest commercial telegraph system, connecting his stores in Haiku and Makawao, Maui. The following year, he is granted a charter for the Hawaiian Telegraph Company. Dickey’s stores sold general goods, and for 20 years served as the local post offices.
