ISLAND NEWS ARCHIVES – November 1, 1898: Work proceeds apace to electrify certain buildings on Oahu, Maui and the Big Island. Today, the superintendent of the Department of Government Electric Light Works announces a plan to put all new electric lines from this point forward underground.

The superintendent expresses his concern that above ground electric lines pose a risk of fire and adverse public health, as well as accident.

What happened? Today we have more poles than ever, many horrendously tall, and planted right next to rotting poles. Common sense and good government bites the dust more than a century ago, just as it does today.

The Hawaii Superferry’s $350,000 in campaign contributions and lobbying appear to have been well spent. As soon as Lingle signs the bill, the Superferry can sail – unless perhaps enviromental groups are successful in challenging the constitituionality of this special law.
