The Peloponnesian War began between the Greek states of Sparta and Athens, depending upon when you want to start counting. The militaristic Spartans claimed the war was initiated to bring freedom to the Greeks. In truth, the war began not with a formal declaration, as historian Donald Kagan has written, but with a stealthy and deceitful raid in peacetime by a powerful state against a much smaller adversary. In fact, the fighting began after incessant prompting by a vocal but minor group within Sparta. 2,433 years later, the Iraqi war began. 1605: The Gunpowder Plot: in an attempt to regain the British throne, Catholics plan to blow up the English Parliament but leader Guy Fawkes is arrested before the attempt (he is eventually executed by hanging)
1872: Susan B Anthony is fined $100 for trying to vote for Ulysses S Grant (she never pays the fine)
1895: The first U.S. patent is granted for the “original application of an internal combustion hydrocarbon motor to a motor vehicle” – the gasoline-powered automobile (to George B Selden of Rochester NY)
1917: The U.S. Supreme Court determines strikes down a Louisville Kentucky ordinance requiring persons of differing races to live in separate areas (Buchanan v. Warley)
1935: The board game “Monopoly” is introduced by Parker Brothers Company
1974: Ella Grasso (CT) is elected to become the first female U.S. governor not related to a previous governor
1994: Former President Ronlad Reagan discloses he has Alzheimer’s disease
1998: A study is made public showing strong genetic evidence that Thomas Jefferson fathered at least one child by his slave, Sally Hemings
