The federal government returns the island of Kaho‘olawe to the State of Hawaii, and pledges $450 million to clean up the unexploded bombs and other ordinance embedded and strewn around the island after more than 40 years of use as a bombing range. One year later, it is apparent that a lot more money will be needed to clean up the island and make it safe. U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye (Dem. – Hawaii) pledges “whatever it takes” in funds
