December 19th, 1831: December 19th, 1831: Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop’s Birthday. Bernice Pauahi was the great-granddaughter of King Kamehameha I and the last surviving Princess Bernie Pauahi Bishopdescendant of his royal line. Born in Honolulu to Ali‘i Abner Paki and Laura Konia, she married businessman Charles Reed Bishop in 1850 over the objections of her parents. King Kamehameha V offered her the throne before he died, but she declined. Bernice Pauahi never used the title Princess in her lifetime.
On the October 16, 1884, at the age of 52, Bernie Pauahi died of cancer. Her estate of 365, 800 acres is the largest private landowner in the state of Hawaii. The revenues from these lands are used to operate the Kamehameha Schools, which were established in 1887 according to her last will and testament.

The United States recognizes Hawaii. At the time, the white men in charge had their hands full, what with enslaving and slaughtering, not to mention raping, blacks throughout the South, the country had no time to think that Hawaii might be a nice country to take over.
