TODAY – Vernal Equinox, The First Day of  Spring: The vernal equinox occurred this morning  at 7:44 am, EDT, or 1:44 am, HST. This is when the Sun crosses the equator heading north for the year. The Sun rises and sets nearly due east and west, and day and night are nearly equal in length.
