Anguish, Pain & Suffering

Most people never consider that pain is unavoidable in life, but that suffering is entirely consensual.

To some, this sounds harsh. It sounds as if there is blame. But that is not my point. My point is that pain is of the body, it is repeatable, its strength can be measured and compared.

Suffering is of the mind and emotions: it is of words and images: of expectations and frustrated desires.

Suffering can be eliminated, but not pain. Pain is of the flesh, suffering has no concrete place in the world.

March 28th, 1937: The US Army announces that there will be massive war games surrounding the Hawaiian islands.  More than 100 ships and nearly 40,000 men will take part in a faux invasion of Hawaii, and the defensive actions taken to repel it. “Enemy forces” land in Paia Bay two months later but are met with brave defenders of the realm. The army declares the United States is ready to protect its interests in the Pacific.  Pearl Harbor happens four years later.
