Hawaiian Islands Tour – Molokai

Come On & Join Us - Molokai
By Maui Curmudgeon

This is the 3rd in a 7-part series of Maui Curmudgeon’s Hawaiian Islands Tour.

Molokai is the one Hawaiian island where you WILL experience old Hawaii. Yeah, we know, “they” say that about Lanai and Kauai and even the Big Island, but that’s all bull. Hawaii is located on Molokai. The rest is wishing.

The people on Molokai are tough – they’ve prevented cruise ships from coming, drove out their largest employer, the “Ranch” hotel and grounds (because it wanted to expand), and generally have the reputation of being unwelcoming. Not true, unless you want to move there. If you’re a traveler however, you’d be hard pressed to find nicer Hawaiians.

What makes Molokai worth visiting:

Quantas AirJune 30, 1959: This really has nothing to do with Maui per se, but I find it interesting anyway. Before Hawaii became a state, the very first commercial jet to come to Hawaii arrived today, from San Francisco. The flight took 4 hours and 49 minutes (which is about what it takes today too). It was a Boeing 707 called The City of Sydney, and yes, it was owned by Quantas Airlines. The Royal Hawaiian Band played “Waltzing Matilda”. And for those of you who remember the movie “Rainman,” yes, it’s true. Quantas is the only major carrier in  the world that has never had an air accident.

Hawaiian Islands Tour – Lanai

Come On & Join Us - Lanai
By Maui Curmudgeon

This is the 2nd in a 7-part series of Maui Curmudgeon’s Hawaiian Islands Tour.

Depending on whom you believe, about 95% to 97% of Lanai is owned by one company – Castle & Cooke – which is owned by one family, the Murdochs. The island has a population of about 3,500, many, many of whom are dirt poor.

How poor? When a program to help teach people how to grow their own food in their own backyards went to Lanai, several residents told them it wouldn’t work because lots of people didn’t even have enough money to buy hoses to water the garden. That’s poor.

Still, What makes Lanai worth visiting:

Hawaiian Islands Tour – Oahu

By Maui Curmudgeon

This is the 1st in a 7-part series of Maui Curmudgeon’s tour of the Hawaiian Islands.

OK, we’ve given up. For years we’ve prayed that tourists stop coming here. (Proof 17,671 that there is no god). The tourists keep coming. We’ll be blunt: we don’t mind travelers, you know, those people who come and take pictures and leave footprints and all that. But we despise tourists, the pasty fat inbreds who come here to swing a golf club, clog our roads, drag along their screaming brats, and whine about the prices.

We now realize that everyone’s gonna come anyway, and we’ve decided to help them.

Recently (the past two months) we have revisited every major Hawaiian island, and so we’ve decided to help you with your travels. First up, Oahu.

We on the neighbor islands love Oahu. Why? Because the majority of tourists who visit Hawaii go to Oahu and STAY PUT. Isn’t that nice of them?
