I am old enough to have known someone who met Abraham Lincoln. I knowingly knew a man who met Hitler, and one who knew Mao.

Once, while writing a paper for school, I dialed the telephone number of a German man, in order to ask him how he pronounced his name. He became so agitated, suspicious and hostile, that I realized that I had inadvertently contacted a war criminal.

Mildred & Richard LovingJune 12th, 1967: LOVING DAY – Richard and Mildred Loving win their Supreme Court case supporting the legality of their inter-racial marriage. The court voted unanimously to overturn the conviction of the Lovings, a young interracial couple, for being married in the state of Virginia. This decision struck down the anti-miscegenation laws — written to prevent the mixing of the races — that were on the books until 1967 in more than a dozen states, including Virginia.  Democratic Presidential Nominee Barack Obama, born in 1961,  is the product of an interracial marriage.
