YESTERDAY: The Big Island Will Have the World’s Largest Telescope Atop Mauna Kea. The Thirty Meter Telescope, or TMT Project, will be the largest optical telescope ever built — reaching farther into space and seeing more clearly than existing telescopes by a factor of 10 to 100, according to the project. Construction is scheduled to begin on the TMT in 2011, with completion in 2018. The 30-meter primary mirror will have nine times the collecting area of the 10-meter Keck Telescopes, now the world’s largest optical/infrared telescopes.
