Islanmd of Kahoolawe

November 12, 2003: The federal government returns the island of Kaho‘olawe to the State of Hawaii, and pledges $450 million to clean up the unexploded bombs and other ordinance embedded and strewn around the island after more than 40 years of use as a bombing range. One year later, it is apparent that a lot more money will be needed to clean up the island and make it safe. U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye (Dem. – Hawaii) pledges “whatever it takes” in funds

Today, 74% of the island’s surface is cleared. But, only 9% of the island’s surface has been cleared to a depth of four feet (called for in the original plan). Ten percent of the island, or 2,936 acres, has not been cleared and is unsafe to access. No additional federal funds have been forthcoming. Learn more about Kaho‘olawe
