Wayne Nishiki November 23, 2008: It was revealed this week that Wayne Nishiki violated election law by filing a financial disclosure form more than a month after it was due. This kept voters from knowing before the election, that he had borrowed $100,000 from developer Everett Dowling.

Nishiki, had a reputation as an anti-development lawmaker and was widely supported by Maui environmental groups for the 2008 election. During his campaign for the South Maui County Council seat, he attacked his opponent Don Couch for accepting campaign donations from developers. At the same time, Nishiki still owed developer Dowling $100,000 from a loan he received in 2005 while a private citizen. A year later details of the loan are still murky and Nishiki remains in office.  Read editorial >
