Today: “Maui Prince” To Be Sold at Auction. Honolulu real estate developer and broker Chris Lau has been appointed commissioner to auction the Makena Beach and Golf Resort (formerly the Maui Prince), which was foreclosed last year. More >

February 10th, 2004: The Maui News reports that housing prices on Maui reach record highs, with an average selling price of $612,000, which one Realtor calls “startling”. The median price for a house in Wailea/Makena for the same time period was $1,600,000. Three years later, in the largest bust of the housing market ever recorded in U.S. history, housing prices plummet nationwide – except Hawaii – and in 2008 it is estimated that 2 million people will lose their homes because, not to put too fine a point on it, they bought houses they couldn’t really afford in the first place.
