HAWAIIAN WORD OF THE DAY — Ka‘awela: Jupiter
TODAY: The Ahihi-Kinau Natural Area Reserve in South Maui will remain closed for another two years, the DLNR announced this week. The reserve, a popular recreation area near La Perouse Bay, was closed Aug. 1, 2008, after large numbers of visitors had been hiking across the lava flows in search of coves that had been publicized in guidebooks as snorkel spots called “Fishbowl” and “Aquarium.” In the photo above, taken two years before the closure, recreationers enjoy one such banned location.
